Pride Week: Films in Spanish

Hello Olas Family! To continue our celebration of Olas Pride Week, we are excited to recommend 8 films in Spanish that highlight the experiences and voices of the LGBTQ+ community. These films are great opportunities to hone your Spanish speaking skills and celebrate Pride Month with Olas.
Our first recommendation is the movie Pelo Malo, an Olas favorite! Many of us have watched this movie in our Spanish classes at Georgetown University. A 9 year old Brazilian boy wants to straighten his hair, exploring homophobia, racism, and politics.

Our next recommendation is the film Jose, a coming of age film of a young gay man in Guatemala City.

Next, we encourage you to watch Una mujer fantástica, which follows a trans woman in the aftermath of her boyfriend's death. This film won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film and helped pass the Gender Identity Law in Chile.

We recommend the movie Todos cambiamos, which follows the life of the father of a "perfect" Panamanian family after he comes out as trans.

We encourage you to watch XXX, a film that follows the story of a 15 year old intersex person who struggles with their identity.

Next, we recommend you watch El niño pez, a movie about two lesbian women who become involved in a murder case.

We recommend Retablo, a movie that follows the life of a young boy who lives in rural Peru when he discovers his father is gay. This film is written and acted in Ayacucho Quechua (indigenous language).

Last but certainly not least, we encourage you to watch Mosquita y Mari, a movie about two Chicana high schoolers growing up in a Los Angeles immigrant community.

We hope you engage with this list of powerful Spanish films to celebrate Olas Pride Week and to continue practicing what you learn in your conversations with Olas moms! Come discuss your favorite moments at our weekly Olas Interest Session on Wednesday, July 1 at 5:30 EST using this Zoom link: https://lnkd.in/e-aB4Qv.
